Compare Kindles – Thoughts

Unless you have avoided television and the internet for many years, you have more than likely heard of the Amazon eBook. The Kindle reader is a natty little device that allows you to read books, magazines, newspapers, blogs and more on a compact handheld wireless device.
Think of it as an iPod for books, where you can store over 200 of your favorite books and read them anytime you like wherever you happen to be. If you are thinking of buying a new book – no problem, just download it right to your eReader in just a few minutes.
The Amazon Kindle Reader was listed as one of Oprah’s favorite things in October 2008 and as we all know what happens when Oprah recommends something – the products fly off the shelves!
And that is just what happened. The Kindle became out of stock and left many people Kindle-less for Christmas. Currently Amazon is producing more readers and shipments are expected mid February so it will be a long wait for some customers.
If you are prepared to wait then perhaps putting your name on the waiting list is something you want to do, but before you rush out and hand over your credit card you need to take into consideration if you really must have the Kindle reader or just want to have the latest cool gadget.
Yes, the Kindle is handy, especially if you are an avid reader – but it is expensive so is not for everyone.
So if you currently read a lot of books, or would like to take your collection travelling with you, or even if money is no object then go ahead and purchase the Amazon Kindle Reader, but if you are broke and on a budget – you should visit the library instead.
Kindle Wifi
The Kindle Wifi is the entry level Kindle E Reader. This was the beginner in the range. It has a 6″ reading area and can store around 3,500 books. This version of the Kindle is a really light weight and is excellent for travel. If you only read occasionally, or only around the house this model will be perfect for you.
Cons
The Kindle Wifi can store your entire library, but it does require Wifi to access your online collection. You will also need Wifi to shop or download any additional books.
Kindle Wfi + 3g
3G gives you the ability to access your books from anywhere. You can not only access your entire library, you can download many new books from the Amazon Marketplace. You get 3G pretty much anywhere so won’t get bored any time soon.
Cons
There are no real complaints about this model. 3G uses battery life a little faster, but you do have two to three weeks of battery life.
Kindle DX
The Kindle DX is the latest top shelf model of Amazon’s Kindle. The DX has a much bigger screen. The DX also comes equipped with Wifi and 3G.
Cons
The battery life is not quite as good as the other two models and this is because of the larger screen, but having the larger screen really is worth it. The battery life is still almost two weeks long. The Kindle DX is a little bigger and heavier so it is excellent for around the house or on vacation, by the beach or pool. If you are going to be using your Kindle on a day to day basis however you may want to get the smaller size. If you carry a suitcase or a bag big enough for a 9.7 inch Kindle, you might consider the upgrade.
