Basic Rules For Guest Blogging Success

By FTS | August 22nd, 2011

“Mi casa es su casa.” “Mi blog es su blog.”

There has been lots of hot talk on guest blogging of late. Everyone loves guests.

But there is a distinction between “good” guests and “bad” guests. A welcome guest is one who is friendly and respectful. We don’t welcome guests who leave our house looking like a tornado swept through.

You can do it, even if you are not a blog writer. The following are the rules you’ll need to follow if you wish to be a welcomed guest blogger.

The first step is research. Get to know the blog.
- Does the host blogger use high-brow language or down-to-earth slang?
- Are posts one-sided or are they more objective?
- What tone does the blogger use? (casual, humoristic, academic, irreverent, serious)
- What topics does the blog cover?
- Are all the posts long? Short? Medium? All different lengths?
- Is the writing top-quality and truly original…or are they just a new wording of well-worn ideas?
- Are posts mostly of a practical nature or more philosophical.

You want to write a guest post that will fit in well, so study carefully what the blogger does and try to emulate his or her style.

Next, make sure what you write is truly interesting. Even if the blog you are writing for is formal or serious in nature, you can still find colourful ways to write. you can always use stories and analogies. Everyone loves stories, and they really work. It’s a secret that freelance writers know. Everyone from self-help gurus to politicians to religious leaders use stories to connect to their audiences. Bloggers use them, too.

Third, bring value to the host blog. You might have to reach deep. What reason might a blogger want a guest blogger writing on his blog? The truth is, some bloggers just won’t be interested. Not every blogger welcomes guest bloggers. But many do.

Many bloggers want more content than they can create themselves.

Many bloggers seek credibility by inviting experts in the field. (Are you and expert?)

If you have an amazingly strong account at Twitter or StumbleUpon, the blogger might welcome the traffic you can bring in.

This might sound strange, but quite true – the blogger might not be able to write very well. Lack of education or English as a second language often compels bloggers to seek people who can write English well.

This might seem a bit repetitious, but study the blog. Not only will that give you clues about how to write the post, but also about what you might need to offer the host blogger to convince him your post brings value to his blog.

Here is the fourth rule: Approach only those blog owners who welcome guests. A good tool for finding guety-blogging-friendly bloggers is MyBlogGuest.com .

Let’s end with the obvious, since you are probably wondering why I did not mention it earlier. Write well. If you write trash, your post will be accepted on a trashy blog. You get what you pay for. Or what you write for. Or what you scribble for.

Follow these rules, and you’ll probably do very well in your guest blogging promotion, whether as an approach to SEO, as a traffic builder or as a means of reaching out and building more credibility in your field. Guest blogging can be fun, and it can be profitable when you do it right.
