All About The Online Business Directory Concept
By Stuart M. Gray | August 21st, 2008Business directories are specialised, informative and easy-to-use listings of businesses provided in a single compilation. With access to a business directory, consumers and other businesses can easily find out about a particular company offering the services or products they are looking for. Online business directories are even more convenient for the average user.
Several business directories use the alphabetical categorisation for their listings, which means, if you search for an electrical equipment manufacturer, all the companies falling under that category will be displayed under the letter ‘E’, On the other hand, some directories use the service type to categorise, so their classifications are represented as business services, cars and automotive, home appliances, financial & legal services, transport, shopping, electronics etc.
Like most other services, business directories are also available online now. These online business directories are available in two primary methods – paid directories and free ones. You wouldn’t see much of a difference between the free and paid directories and the publisher has the discretion to keep the listings free or to charge for them.
The paid business directories ask for subscriptions from those businesses they have listed, while the free directories depend on sponsor ads for their revenue. These free online business directories request for link exchanging between the directory and the listed companies. This allows both parties to build web traffic by directing each other’s web visitors to the linked site. So, the directory links to the business websites and they in turn link to the directory, sharing visitors for mutual benefit.
Some business directories offer more than just a basic listing with added features, such as dedicated web pages, picture galleries and job advertising sections specially allocated per listed business. Most business directories will ask the company to pay for these services, but there are a few which provide all of this completely free of charge.
Submitting a business listing to an online business directory doesn’t take much time. Your business information is compulsory to enter a listing, including the company name, registration, email, telephone, address etc.
A business listing is generally brief, with more information found either by following a web link to the company’s main website or the web page they use within the directory. Once a listing is submitted, any visitor to the directory can navigate via its main page index links to find your business easily.
Most business directories, whether online or offline, focus on listing a particular region’s businesses. Usually, these regions are selected based upon neighbourhood, city, district, province, state etc. Country-wide and international business directories are very rare, especially online
